This is something I normally do not do on deviantArt, of which I reserve for Fur Affinity. Generally, the Journals on dA are reserved for anecdotes on the artistic community, mostly that of deviantArt. My apologies that this time around any extent of observation or sinister wit are lacking. For those wanting an actual Journal, the plan will likely be something along the lines of completing one of the to-dos from my "12 Days of Tiny Journals" within the next two weeks. Of the extent of experimentation, it is mostly to see really what sort of commission culture really is on dA by being outright blunt... Would anyone on dA be willing to commission me here? The majority of the commissions I do are for people from Fur Affinity, or individuals who have simultaneous deviantArt and Fur Affinity accounts. Given the nature of Fur Affinity this means that on deviantArt, there are a lot of images I can't/won't post, and a lot of the ones that are tend to be provocative or somewhat distasteful (I have received complaints ranging from "Why do I edit some?" to "Why I don't post everything I draw" to "I wish people would ask you (me) for nicer things). I would like to show more variety than just furries and smut and would be delighted to offer my skills to those in a community I believe have a greater appreciation of artistic skill over just money shots.
For anyone interested (or remotely curious) you can view my commission guide below (all the links are safe). And my apologies once again for not creating a productive journal:

I would like to relate the nature of commissions, as I have observed them here on dA. So I will.
To lead off I must state that I am an avid browser, like many others. While browsing I only view posts that 'catch my eye' for one reason or another. As such is the case, any further statements (by me) must be understood as coming from that point of view. They are in no way indicative of a full 100% viewpoint of the works and commission activity present here on dA.
(I believe you know, and understand, my activities here, which can be considered either positive or negative, depending on who I am interacting with)
Of the commissions I have come across in my 2+ years here I have found that approximately 60+% fall into the mature/adult category, with the remaining 30+% going into the 'G' category. (Again, I believe these numbers are skewed toward the number of violations I encounter) In any case, I see this as a weak market for commissions due to the policies here on dA...unless the commissioned member has a following of members who want 'G' work.
It seems that 'G' work can be had on multitudes of online sites. With hundreds of works to pick from, exact poses/situations are not as important to the buyer. Simply put, if you want a picture of Pikachu smiling/jumping/shooting electricity, there are thousands available! Add in the fact that one can download, or copy it for free, from the net, and you see much less need for commissions. However, if you want a picture of Pikachu having sex with say,. Ash, the availability drops way off. Especially here on dA. (I have seen it here, but not for long, and it was a commission) A commission may be the only way to acquire that which is not readily available
The next thing to consider is the differences between dA and FA.
From the diversity of subject matter on dA, to the specific subject on FA.
Whereas dA has policies prohibiting pornographic content, FA seems to allow such content. More of FA's members desire much more specific mature content. Thus FA provides a place for works that are not readily available, and therefore, FA has a stronger commission market.
On the other hand is dA,.. Which has such a massive amount of works, and sooo many artists, that it may just be easier to Google the subject image! Luck alone may be what leads someone to your image! With dA's large data base, and diverse subject matter, time becomes a factor. Again, with the 'G'eneral/R rated works so widely available, and the time factored in, dA's commission market will continue to rely on friends/watchers referrals. I'm sorry to say it but, I do not consider dA's commission market to be strong overall.
That aside though... I do know several dA members, including you, that seem to have done many commissions! And yes, I have recommended several of you to others who have asked for my help in finding specific subject matter for their projects. Friends can help promote you. Ask them to. Also, promote yourself!!! A photog' friend of mine promotes herself on fb, tumbler, and other sites. She is a graphics art student in her internship, but she really wants to be a photographer. Her self-promotion has already got her some paying photo gigs!
GO FOR IT KRABBY!
dA does have a relatively weak commission market, and either just because of the environment (where I believe furries live in a commission culture), or the fact that the usual commission material isn't welcomed here. It is a weak market.
After the Odesk experience, I'm a little jaded about promoting myself through other avenues, sadly.
As far as self promotion goes,..I have to say this. Risk is part of life. Many risks I have taken have gone bad. I am owed thousands of dollars I shall never see. I was married,..then divorced,..ect. I could give up on taking risks. But no,..instead, I have learned to be more aware of the consiquences of the risks I take. Better judgment is served well by our own situational awareness. (I know that checking the depth of the water myself is smarter than taking someone elses word,..BEFORE I jump off the bridge!)
Taking risks is hard. It is a personal choise.
The wisest choises we make are the well informed ones.
Do what YOU think is best.
If you take risks, then it can lead to some great adventures, or better rewards. Guess I'm just not as willing to get wet.
I think you are wise to do what you think is best for you.
But, remember to go with your gut feelings/instincts. They are usually right!
I'm assuming the fact that I'm mostly reliable, pay-wise, has a factor as well?
