Psychopomps

Description

I don't have a lot of characters that perform resurrections, and of those, no one does it the exact same way. I also have no way of particularly describing it. The title is my new, favorite word. Actually, totally surprised this one even exists because I had no way of describing this, and then ended up finding out about it on QI. A 'psychopomp' is a guide for the recently dead; Anubis and Charon two popular, ancient versions of this. Left is one of my most recent characters, Fatality, and she is based off of the character on the right, Mewblade. I'm not sure what the word for "violently wrenches the recently deceased from being dead" is but they sort of perform the non-intended version of a psychopomp.

Fatality's resurrections cycles are called either the "white space", the "white forest", or "the run" depending on her energy reserves. She will go, find the fallen individual, and guide them to a gate and basically take them back to their dead body. Mewblade's resurrection cycle is a three stage "trance", but usually referred to as the "blackness" since it's the initial start state. She goes to her victims, parks herself and basically manipulates/moves the entire space before depositing her victim back into their body. Still psychopomps, just in the reverse direction. Mewblade brute forces it, and Fatality is considerably more traditional. In any case, because they're related in ability, then figured I'd feature them both in the same image.

Fatality and Mewblade. The fun fighting for contrast. Mewblade is basically black. And Fatality is white and shiny. For added balance, put Fatality in green, and then they become literal color inversions of one another. Nice and easy! Granted, if you actually want contrast, you don't put the white character on the white background, and the black character on the black one. But I swear, I'm keeping to the proper scenes of vast nothingness. It really is a background! That aside, Fatality took forever. Human faces, and those blade feathers of hers. All a pain. And shoes. I hate drawing shoes. Then don't get me started on the proportions, since she has to be androgynous! Why can't she be nice and naked and easy like Mewblade? Oh right, she's not a Pokemon. (Looks like a cockatoo though.) Boring poses, but at least they cross nicely. Sort of like the hand-off look.

I'm really digging this one, going for ol' ying-yang metaphor.
