As the admin for #The-Mew3-Townside on deviantArt I ran a contest for the the best designed Mewthrees. Of the top three winners they would get prizes as well as a drawing of the winning Mewthrees . With the final third place finisher being the deviant *Dragonith .

This one took third place mostly for its unique but not distracting details. I believe this design was more or less considered the falling off point between average complexity and too simple. Of the three winners, its probably the most modern, Gen 5 looking of them. The actual design was suppose to represent dark matter which sort of is confusing to interpret between say, the Sugimori style (so many people were so obsessed with this style, yet I have no idea why) and other styles between say the anime and custom ones. For the most part, that didn't fault it since by Pokemon standards either it meant the black spacy stuff was invisible, or that the black spacy stuff could be rendered as black. I took that a bit differently here.

Easiest one to draw and shade by far, well, at least for me. Did my usual space render stuff (Noise is so versatile in Photoshop) and then went for transparency and minimal shading where needed. Still probably should have made the dark matter more invisible, but then that might be a bit too odd.

amazing . . . how does one create such cosmic effects?

being a self-taught art student I'm always looking for new techniques to learn

Photoshop; Clouds, Noise, Levels, a bit of Gaussian Blur, and scaling. A few layers.

I work with photoshop elements . . . and I haven't had much practice with layers . . . yet

but at least I know what tools to work with next, I've got a dragon piece that needs the phantom effects of the body plus the cosmic effects on her wings

do you know any sites that give lessons on layers?

I've laid "layers" of the gradian tool when I did Dulcy, Shade, and Night . . . but I don't think that trick will work for what I'm trying for

No idea. I'm self-taught but more savvy. Can try Youtube.

Same here . . . a few art classes in school . . . but mostly collecting art books and studying on my own . . . and picking up tips from other artists I admire.

And just experimenting with different tools in the software.

And there are still ones I haven't even tried yet.

It's basically the Noise tool and contrast.
